E-waste management

Our e-waste programme

At Meezan Electronic Scales Pvt. Ltd., we believe it is our responsibility to do business in a way that respects the environment. We are committed to product stewardship through the life cycle of our electronics, and to compliance with e-waste rules in India.

About e-waste

E-waste means waste electrical and electronic equipment, whole or in part, or rejects from manufacturing and repair, which are intended to be discarded. It is the term used for old, end-of-life or discarded appliances that use electricity. Greater use of electrical and electronic equipment has increased the amount of e-waste. A UN report has estimated worldwide generation of e-waste at around 30 to 50 million tonnes a year. E-waste can contain substances that are hazardous to the environment and to human health.

Benefits of recycling

Saves natural resources

Useful and valuable material should be recovered from e-waste so that natural resources are conserved. Recycling end-of-life products helps save resources and reduce waste.

Reduces environmental pollution

Scientific disposal of e-waste reduces environmental pollution. Making products from recycled materials creates less air and water pollution than making them from virgin materials.

An alternate resource

As virgin resources are depleted, e-waste can be an alternate resource because it contains recoverable materials such as aluminium, copper, gold, silver and ferrous materials.

Risks of unscientific disposal

Health risks

Health risks may result from direct contact with harmful materials such as lead, cadmium, chromium, brominated flame retardants or polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), from inhalation of toxic fumes, and from accumulation of chemicals in soil, water and food.

Children are vulnerable

Children need specific protection from e-waste exposure. Because they are still growing, their intake of air, water and food is higher relative to adults, and so is the risk of absorbing hazardous chemicals. Exposure may cause irreversible damage to the central nervous system, immune system, and reproductive and digestive systems.

Environmental degradation

Oil and gases present in some e-waste, such as in compressors and CRTs, can pollute the environment. Burning rubber and plastic in the open causes air pollution.

Accidental breakage

Accidental breakage of electronics and e-waste can threaten the environment. While toxic components remain inside the manufacturer’s outer shell, they pose less danger. Breakage can let toxic elements leak into the immediate environment. This is a major concern in informal disposal and recycling, so e-waste should be given only to an authorised recycler.

E-waste (Management) Rules, 2016

The E-waste (Management) Rules, 2016 aim to channel e-waste in India to environmentally sound recycling. Much of this waste has been handled by the unorganised sector using crude practices that cause higher pollution, lower recovery, waste of resources and damage to the environment.

Guidelines for disposal of end-of-life products

Packaging material is recyclable. The appliance may also contain recyclable material marked with a label. Do not mix it with ordinary waste.

How to drop off products

When dropping off an item at a collection point:

  1. Pack the item in light packaging so the device is secured.
  2. Identify the collection point in your state through customer care.
  3. Take the packaged product to the collection point.
  4. Fill in the form provided at the collection point.
  5. Submit the package with the completed form.

Recycling organised by Greeniva Recycler is carried out in line with the rules on waste electrical and electronic equipment. Thank you for taking this step for the environment.

As part of this partnership, Greeniva Recycler provides environmentally sound management of electronics that have reached end of life. Greeniva Recycler has obtained the necessary authorisations from the appropriate government agencies for its processing facilities, and it recycles and disposes of e-waste so that inappropriate waste management does not harm the environment.

Producer awareness

Customers are advised on how electronic goods should be handled and channelled to an approved e-waste recycler under the E-waste Management Rules, 2016. Limited awareness of the effects of end-of-life products is a major concern. Meezan Electronic Scales Pvt. Ltd. will run awareness programmes on the environmental hazards of electronic waste as part of its extended producer responsibility plan, including support for workshops and seminars with academic institutions, industry associations, schools, colleges, resident welfare associations, bulk consumers, regulatory bodies and the media, so that the take-back programme can be explained widely.

An e-waste awareness manual can be provided to customers with handling guidelines under the e-waste rules.

Seminars and workshops

Region-wise awareness programmes and workshops are planned, inviting schools, colleges, institutions, retailers, dealers and bulk consumers. The sessions cover hazardous content in electronic goods and the benefits of recycling. Seminars and workshops are planned once a year in metro cities, smaller cities, urban areas and north-eastern states.

Training

At the time of sale, customers are shown how to use the equipment and that, at the end of its life, it should be disposed of under the e-waste rules and not left in the open.

Awareness is also spread through social media, including Facebook, and through pamphlets and booklets.

Logos

Packaging carries an e-waste recycling logo.
